Basic Definition of Overtraining: “Training too hard with not enough rest.”

A lot of people are so eager to tone or gain muscle that they forget that rest is just as important as the workout. Muscles lose strength and elasticity when fatigued, so without rest and time to heal, tearing and other major injury can occur.

How can you tell if you’re Overtraining?

There is no rule or a set guidelines of Exercise VS. Rest. Everyone has different needs and therefore reacts differently to exercise. However, there are a few “clues” that your body will give you to let you know you are overtraining.

Lack of Muscle Gain: One of the most obvious clues that you are overtraining is if you stop improving or are unable to improve your muscle strength, mass or endurance even when working out regularly. A common mistake when this arises is to push yourself even harder. Your body may just not been getting enough rest. Try taking a week off. Yes! A whole week, and see what happens. You will probably notice newfound energy and strength when you come back to it.

So Sore! The muscles you are targeting are still sore from your previous workout when you work them again. If this is the case, you may be exercising those muscles before they are ready.

Lack of Energy: You don’t have enough energy to take you through your workout. You may also have a general lack of energy and/or feel tired throughout the day.

Stabbing Pain: Stabbing pain in a muscle that becomes worse when the muscle is used suggests that the muscle is overworked and most likely strained or has another type of injury. Rest the muscle, elevate it, and apply ice. If several days of rest and icing do not lessen the pain, visit a doctor.

Difficulty Sleeping: Overtraining can cause altered protein and hormone levels and elevated resting heart rate, which can lead to insomnia. This becomes a vicious circle because you obviously need sleep to properly rest and heal your body after a workout.

Mood Swings: In extreme cases, overtraining can cause depression, anxiety, irritability and anxiousness.

Other symptoms are: loss of appetite, frequent illness, and loss or irregular menstrual cycles for women.

So you think you’re overtraining? What to do?

First things first: Take time off (about a week). Give your body time to rest and catch up. After that, try reducing the intensity and/or frequency of your workouts. If you feel better (I.E. less sore, more energy, finally achieving successful gains in muscle size and strength) you can reasonably assume that you were overtraining in your old routine.

Make sure you’re eating right. Without enough calories, water and the proper balance of protein, carbs and fats, your body will have trouble repairing muscle tissue after workouts. See our article: What to Eat Before and After a Workout

Rotate Working Different Target Muscle Groups. A lot of people will workout their abs every day to try and get a 6-pack. Remember that muscle actually build during recovery time. Cycle different muscle groups day to day in order to give sufficient rest time.

Listen to your body. Be Realistic. If you are highly stressed or not getting enough sleep don’t push your body too hard. If you are already working in a physical demanding job (ex. farmer) there is no need to work out every day.

Give yourself days off in between workouts. Your body will thank you by giving you the results you are after.

Now that the days are getting longer and the weather’s getting better, why not take your workout to your favorite park? There’s nothing like fresh air, great scenery and a little sun on your back to give you extra motivation to push yourself a little harder.

To get that butt moving, here are 7 great Human Trainer exercises you can take with you outdoors.

All you need is your Human Trainer suspension gym with the versatility anchors, and a sturdy tree or jungle gym!

To warm up your body jog around the park for 10-15 minutes.

The Workout

Attach the main straps of the Human Trainer to the Versatility Anchors. Find a sturdy horizontal tree branch or horizontal bar in your local park’s playground.

1. One Arm Rows (3 x 15 reps each side)

Facing your straps, stand with feet hip distance apart.

Hold the handle of the left strap in your left hand. Bend elbow and keep hand close to your chest. Keep the body as straight as possible.

With your right arm fully extended in front of you, keeping your legs straight and core tight, straighten your left arm and reach back with your right, trying to touch the ground behind you.

Pull your body up with you left hand, returning to first position with hand tucked into chest.

Swing straight right arm in front of you and try to touch the main strap as high up the strap as you can.

Repeat 10-15 times. Switch arms and repeat.

2. One Leg Bicep Curls (3 x 15 reps each side)

Facing your straps, stand with feet hip distance apart.

Hold the handles with straight arms. Palms facing up. Straps should be fully extended.

Begin by shifting your weight backwards. Lift one leg off the floor, straight in front of you.

While keeping the arms and shoulders lifted, pull both arms towards the shoulders so hands come up to your ears. Extend arms. Repeat.

Switch legs for next set.

3. Tricep Press (3 x 15 reps)

Face away from the straps. Palms facing the body.

Shift weight forward and extend both arms straight in front of the body at chest height.

Bend the elbows and arms as the body lowers.

Then press and extend the hands forward as the body shifts backwards.

Keep spine straight and core tight throughout the workout.

4. Chest Press (3 x 15 reps)

Place hands in handles, palms down. With your back facing the straps, shift your weight forward. (Walk your feet further back for greater difficulty).

Keep your arms extended in front of the body at chest height and push your elbows out to the side as your body lowers.

Keep tension in the straps at all times.

Keep arms at chest height throughout the exercise.

5. Pike (3 x 10 reps)

With feet in the foot cradles, get into plank position.

Raise hips straight up, so you forma triangle position. As high as you can go.

Return to plank. Repeat.

Spring is a great time to take a visit to your local farmers’ market. This is the time of year where much of your produce starts to be locally grown, which means fresher and better fruits and veggies!

Some Spring Vegetables are: asparagus, spinach, chives, scallions, lettuce, artichokes, avocados, carrots, fava beans, fennel, peas and radishes.

Spring vegetables provide some of the highest levels of vitamin K, iron, and phytonutrients.

Here is a list of some of our favorite springtime recipes to help you get into the mood.

Mixed Lettuce, Fennel & Orange Salad with Black Olive Vinaigrette

INGREDIENTS

1-tablespoon red-wine vinegar

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

2 cloves garlic, minced

1/8 teaspoon salt, or to taste

Freshly ground pepper, to taste

1/4-cup extra-virgin olive oil

1/2 cup Kalamata olives, pitted and coarsely chopped

1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley

3 medium navel or Valencia oranges

10 cups mixed lettuces, (3 small heads), such as chicory, radicchio and leaf lettuce, torn into bite-size pieces

2 heads Belgian endive, sliced

2 fennel bulbs, sliced

pomegranate seeds, to garnish (optional)

DIRECTIONS

To prepare vinaigrette: Whisk vinegar, lemon juice, mustard, garlic, salt and pepper in a small bowl. Slowly whisk in oil. Stir in olives and parsley.

To prepare salad: Using a sharp knife, remove peel and white pith from oranges. Quarter the oranges; slice pieces crosswise.

Just before serving, combine lettuces, endive, fennel and the orange slices in a large bowl. Drizzle the vinaigrette over the salad and toss to coat well. Garnish with pomegranate seeds.

Tip: Separate items can be made ahead and kept in fridge for up to 8 hours. Do not combine ingredients till you are ready to serve or the salad will get soggy.

Singaporean Asparagus with Ginger

INGREDIENTS

1 1/2 tablespoons canola oil, plus more for grilling

1 Thai chili, thinly sliced

1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger, plus about 20 thin matchsticks

2 garlic cloves, minced

4 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into tablespoons

1 hard-cooked egg yolk, mashed to a paste

1/4-cup heavy cream

Salt

Freshly ground pepper

3/4-pound medium asparagus

1 Chinese sausage link (2 to 3 ounces), thinly sliced

1 tablespoon sauerkraut, squeezed dry

1 scallion, thinly sliced

DIRECTIONS

In a medium saucepan, heat 1/2 tablespoon of the oil. Add the Thai chili, minced ginger and half of the garlic and cook over moderate heat until softened, about 2 minutes. Add the butter and swirl until melted. Add the egg yolk and whisk until blended. Add the cream, season with salt and pepper and simmer just until slightly thickened, about 2 minutes.

Light a grill or preheat a grill pan; oil the grates. Grill the asparagus, turning occasionally, until crisp-tender, about 5 minutes. Transfer the asparagus to a work surface and cut them into 2-inch lengths. In a large skillet, heat the remaining 1-tablespoon of oil. Add the Chinese sausage, sauerkraut, ginger matchsticks and the remaining garlic and cook over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until lightly browned, about 2 minutes. Add the asparagus and scallion and stir-fry until heated through, about 1 minute. Remove from the heat and stir in half of the sauce. Transfer the asparagus to a platter and drizzle with the remaining sauce. Serve right away.

Spring Vegetable Stew

INGREDIENTS

1/4-pound thin white asparagus, cut into 1-inch lengths

1 cup shelled fresh cranberry beans (4 ounces or 1 pound in the pod)

2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

20 thin scallions, white and pale green parts only

1/4-pound beech mushrooms (can substitute with other types)

Salt

6 white turnips, about 2 inches in diameter, peeled and cut into wedges

2 medium carrots, cut into 1-inch-long sticks

2 1/4 cups vegetable stock

One 6-ounce zucchini, halved lengthwise and sliced crosswise 1/4 inch thick

1/2 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest

1-teaspoon fresh lemon juice

One romaine heart, cut into 2-inch pieces

2 tablespoons crème fraîche

1-tablespoon small chervil leaves

1 tablespoon minced chives

DIRECTIONS

In a medium pot of simmering salted water, cook the asparagus over moderately high heat until tender, about 4 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the asparagus to a bowl. Add the cranberry beans to the water and simmer over moderate heat until tender, about 40 minutes. Drain the beans and transfer to the bowl.

Meanwhile, in a medium enameled, cast-iron casserole, heat 1/2 tablespoon of the olive oil. Add the scallions and cook over moderate heat until barely tender, about 1 minute. Transfer the scallions to the bowl with the asparagus. Add another 1/2 tablespoon of the olive oil to the casserole. Add the mushrooms, season with salt, cover and cook over moderate heat, stirring a few times, until lightly browned and tender, about 3 minutes. Transfer the mushrooms to the bowl.

Heat the remaining 1-tablespoon of olive oil in the casserole. Add the turnips and carrots, season with salt and cook over moderate heat for 1 minute. Add 1 cup of the stock, cover and cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes. Add another 1/2 cup of the stock, cover and cook until the turnips and carrots are tender, about 10 minutes longer. Add the zucchini and 1/2 cup of the stock and simmer until the zucchini is just tender, about 4 minutes. Add the remaining 1/4 cup of stock to the casserole along with the lemon zest, lemon juice and lettuce and cook, stirring, until the lettuce just wilts, about 20 seconds. Stir in the crème fraîche.

Add the asparagus, beans, scallions and mushrooms to the stew. Simmer briefly, until heated through, about 30 seconds. Top with the chervil and chives and serve.

Spring Pea Falafel with Marinated Radishes and Minted Yogurt

INGREDIENTS:

MARINATED RADISHES

1-tablespoon vegetable oil

1 large shallot, thinly sliced

2 thyme sprigs

2 tablespoons honey

1/4 cup Champagne vinegar

1 bunch red radishes, thinly sliced

FALAFEL

1/2 cup dried green split peas

1 1/2 cups frozen peas, thawed

1/2 cup chopped onion

1-tablespoon all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons chopped parsley

2 garlic cloves, chopped

1-teaspoon ground coriander

1-teaspoon ground cumin

1/2-teaspoon baking powder

1/4-teaspoon cayenne pepper

1-tablespoon fresh lemon juice

Salt

3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

MINTED YOGURT

1/2-cup plain low-fat Greek yogurt

1 tablespoon chopped mint

1-teaspoon sumac (optional)

Salt and freshly ground pepper

FOR SERVING

1-tablespoon sesame seeds

1/2 small red onion, thinly sliced

1-cup pea shoots or watercress

2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

DIRECTIONS

In a small saucepan, heat the vegetable oil. Add the shallot and thyme and cook over moderately low heat until the shallot is softened, about 4 minutes. Add the honey and vinegar and simmer for 2 minutes. Let cool. Put the radishes in a shallow dish and pour the marinade over them. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.

Working in 2 batches, grind the split peas to a powder in a spice grinder. In a food processor, pulse the thawed peas a few times. Add the ground split peas, onion, flour, parsley, garlic, coriander, cumin, baking powder, cayenne, lemon juice and 1 teaspoon of salt and process until thoroughly combined. Form the mixture into 12 falafel patties using a scant 1/4-cup per patty. Refrigerate the falafel until firm.

In a bowl, combine the yogurt, mint and sumac and season with salt and pepper.

Preheat the oven to 400°. In a large nonstick skillet, heat the olive oil. Add the falafel patties in two batches to the skillet and cook over moderately high heat until browned, crisp and heated through, about 3 minutes per side. Transfer the falafel to a cookie sheet. Warm up all of the patties in the oven, about 4 minutes.

Drain the radishes; discard the thyme sprigs. Spoon the minted yogurt onto plates and top with the radishes and the falafel. Scatter the sesame seeds, red onion and pea shoots all around, drizzle with the lemon juice and serve.

Last February, we asked you who was your BFF. And by that we meant your Best Fitness Friend. We all could use a workout buddy every now and then to push us, be our cheer leaders, and make fitness fun.

Everybody who commented on our photo on Facebook with their fitness goal and tagged their workout partner were all entered to win the Astone Advanced Core Fitness Pack and a box of delicious Simply Bars.

Our Best Fitness Friend winners were Heather Feenstra and Richard Quinn from Comox, BC, Canada! Here’s what they had to say:

A huge thank you to Astone fitness and the Simply Bar for the amazing package sent to both myself and my partner, Richard. Fitness and health require a balance of 3 things in order to progress and prevent injury: Proper nutrition, resistance training, and cardiovascular health. Between the Simply bars, the Ripcords, the DVD videos, and the balance balls, all aspects are hit. Simply Bars are my favorite (and the only) protein bar I will eat. Most are full of synthetic sugars and chemicals which is ironic if they are meant to be healthy. Simply Bars are all natural, taste amazing in every flavour, and provide excellent nutrition and a hefty amount of protein for the small amount of calories.

Resistance bands are a great way to train your muscles, whether you are new to the gym, or are an experienced weight lifter. They are very helpful for training all the small supporting and stabilizing muscles around the joints to help prevent common injuries that can happen on restrictive machines.

I am up to over 4 km runs with Richard now thanks to consistent training, balanced with knowing when to take a break to prevent injury. We are looking forward to doing a lot more outdoor activities as the weather gets warmer.

Sending out another big and appreciative thank you to Astone fitness for picking us as their contest winners. Your customer service is also excellent. Everything is going to good use. Big thumbs up from us!

It’s finally getting warmer, the birds are chirping, the flowers are in bloom. …Why not get outdoors and enjoy it?

A great way to take advantage of the joys of spring is gardening. Growing your own fruits and vegetables has so many great benefits – including getting a great workout!

Think about it. Gardening provides endurance, flexibility, and strength. Pushing wheelbarrows, lifting bags of fertilizer and shoveling all provide resistance training similar to weight lifting. You are working all the major muscle groups and burning calories at the same time! You can also get in a great stretching session from reaching for weeds, bending to plant, and raking.

Gardening for just 30 minutes a day will also help strengthen joints, lower your risk for diabetes, lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and slow osteoporosis.

If you are new to gardening or have just been hibernating all winter, then pace yourself. You don’t want to over do it.

Begin with a warm-up like a short walk and some stretching.

Vary your tasks to avoid repetitive strain injuries (i.e. raking right-handed 15 times, then left-handed 15 times)

When lifting heavy objects remember to lift with your knees- not your back.

OTHER GREAT BENEFITS OF GARDENING ARE:

Relaxation: Gardening is a great way to relax, de-stress, refocus your mind, and get some Vitamin-D. Research on hospital patients has proven that those that we able to go outside for a stroll or had exposure to greenery had quicker healing times and were in better spirits. Studies have shown a link between ADHD and insufficient outdoors time. So plant flowers too! There is nothing like creating your own fresh bouquet to proudly display on your kitchen table.

Kids will eat their veggies! Have your kids help you in the garden or better yet, give them their own little section of the garden to call their own. They’ll have a sense of pride about growing their own food and will want to eat it more. A study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that preschool children who were mostly served homegrown produce were more than twice as likely to eat five servings of fruits and vegetables a day.

You’ll save money on groceries. A healthy plant can provide you with produce all summer long! If you learn to dry, can, preserve or freeze your harvest, you’ll be able to continue to enjoy your homegrown produce long into the winter months as well!

Fresh food is the best food! How long has the food been sitting on your supermarket shelf? How long did it take to travel from the farm to your table? It’s a fact that produce starts to lose its nutrients the moment its picked, so why not pick it yourself and get all the nutrients you can get. It’ll taste better and you won’t have to worry about contamination that may occur at the farm, manufacturing plant, or transportation process.

You’ll help the Planet Earth. Growing your own food without the aid of pesticides will help reduce unnecessary air and water pollution. You’ll also reduce the use of petrol and the resulting pollution that comes with it, from the planes and trucks used to transport fresh produce from all over the world to your local grocery store.

Remember that though gardening is a great workout it should be an addition to your workout regime and shouldn’t replace it. Like any other form of exercise, you have to be active for at least 30 minutes for there to be any benefit.

It may seem overwhelming to grow your own produce, but it’s actually much simpler than it sounds. All you need is a few square feet of soil or even just a couple of pots on your porch. You can even rent a spot at your local community garden.

Many people gain a sense of pride and accomplishment from growing their own food. It’s work that directly helps you nourish your family, and maintain your health.

So go ahead! Take the step. Go out there and start a garden. You won’t regret it. Your wallet, the environment, your body and your family will thank you.

It’s never too late or early to start thinking about your health. Young or old, every step forward you take counts tremendously in the end. Proactivity is the best activity. Take a look at some of our youngest fitness fanatics on The Human Trainer and Ripcords.

During soccer practice, a few young athletes were giving us a run for our money! We believe health and exercise should be incorporated into our lives every day in a fun way. All our exercise equipment are designed exactly to do that. It should never be boring drills, something you dread, or keeps you cooped up inside. And we’ve never seen more enthusiastic kids (and maybe more than some adults!) who want to get out and get moving.

Being active at a young age is beneficial for many reasons:

Builds teamwork and trust

Gives children the opportunity to socialize and interact with one another

Kids learn more about their bodies

Exercise is a great outlet for all that extra energy

A kickstart to a healthier heart, mind, and body

And if you’re thinking,”I don’t have that type of energy anymore,” there are many ways adults can be more active, rejuvenate, and catch up to your kids. Here are some simple fitness and health tips:

Let’s face it. Computers have become our crutch. We spend our days attached to them at work and have our iphones, ipads or other portable devices on had at all times. But how can we not? They have become our daily planners, encyclopedias, entertainment…

And now your phone can even be your personal trainer. There really is an app for everything!

There are so many great apps to help you stay on track with your diet, teach you a brand new exercise routine, or just make what your already doing easier and more fun!

Here is a list of our favorites:

Lose It

Cost: Free
For: Diet & Nutrition

Research shows that people have an easier time losing weight and sticking to exercise if they keep a log.

LOSE IT makes keeping a food journal and workout log easier than ever! The food library has an extensive list that includes name brands and generic categories. There is even a barcode scanner!

Type in your current weight and your goal weight and it will tell you how many calories you can consume in a day in order to achieve your goal. As you log your meals it counts the calories for you and tells you if you go overboard. Add in your daily exercise and it calculates how many calories you burned and how much more you can eat that day.

C25K

Cost: $2.99
For: cardio/running

C25K means Couch to 5k. This app will help make a beginner runner ready to run a 5K in 8 weeks at 3 days a week. It guides you through 30-40-minute sessions; each designed to improve your endurance. Intensity is stepped-up each week and an audio prompter tells you when it’s time to run or walk so there’s no need for coming up with a routine on your own. All you got to do is listen!

iTreadmill

Cost: $1.99
For: cardio

This app acts like a pedometer and tracks your steps, distance and average speed. What’s cool about it is that unlike most pedometers you don’t have to clip it to your belt to have it work, iTreadmill works in pockets and purses! The counter automatically pauses when you stop and restarts when you move again.

BeatBurn Treadmill/Outdoor Trainer

Cost: $3.99
For: cardio

This is the most interesting and fun app that I came across. Not only does this app have real voice motivation and creates a program for you with a new challenge everyday, but it analyzes the beat per minute of the music in your playlists and selects the best songs to fit the intensity of your workout. It changes the beat in the flash of an eye, perfectly matching the pace of your feet. They also have BeatBurn Elliptical Trainer.

iFitness

Cost: $1.99 For: muscle gain/workout

More than 230 exercises divided by body regions or muscle group. 100 instructional videos, routines created by fitness experts, workout and weight logs, (that you can email to yourself) stopwatch, timers and more.

iPump & Fitness Builder

Cost: $9.99
For: muscle gain/workout

We know this one is expensive, but we think it’s worth it.

You can search for workouts by different locations (hotel, home, gym, etc.) AND the body area that you are working on (shoulders, abs, cardio, etc.) iPUMP has thousands of unique exercises with a video for each exercise. Exercises can include weights, kettlebells, bosu, foam rollers and suspension gyms.

Also available, iPump Trainer workouts for an extra fee.

EBOOKS

More of a bookworm? There are also plenty of cool fitness ebooks available for your tablet, Kindle or PC.

Fitness Foods

By Amazon Best Selling Author Gloria Elizabeth Livingston.

This is a great series of ebooks that offer high protein recipes for specific meals of the day (breakfast, lunch or dinner). These recipes fit into any diet plan and at the fraction of the price (Weightwatchers, Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem).

Astone’s Circuit Training Ebooks

Astones’s Circuit Training Ebooks are designed by a certified personal trainer to maximize your efficiency using the benefits of circuit training. The Complete Set of Circuit Training Ebooks gives you result based workout routines to help you train with your Astone Fitness products (Human Trainer, Resistance Bands) or just simply concentrate on particular goals with ebooks catered to abs & core, triceps, legs, etc.

Muscle Myths: 50 Health & Fitness Mistakes You Don’t Know You’re Making (The Lean Muscle Series) [Kindle Edition]

If you’ve ever felt lost in the sea of contradictory training and diet advice out there and you just want to know once and for all what works and what doesn’t when it comes to building muscle and getting ripped, then you need to read this book.

The Jennifer Nicole Lee Fitness Model Diet

JNL’S inspirational weight loss success story has motivated millions worldwide. She is now the world’s top fitness model. This ebook will show you her beauty secrets and fail proof workouts as well as fitness model recipes and food plans.

There are 3 main obstacles that people always face when it comes to their health and fitness: time, information and accountability. Having access to some great information and tools at the tip of your fingers can actually get rid of those problems and increase your chances of success with your health and fitness goals.

Many of these apps are free and can offer you similar information that a trainer would. All you need is to upload it and focus on what they tell you to.

What have you got to lose, except maybe a few pounds?
